And the homework due Monday, please make four dialogs using the templates that we used today with pictures.

If you are able to type in Japanese, please do so.

For tomorrow's class, we will finish Lesson 2 and start lesson 3. So if you have time and the book, please read the grammar part and the vocabulary part (pp. 56〜64). It includes verb conjugation, which is very important.

You are supposed to give a speech of self-introduction in front of all the teachers or workers there.
Please think of how you will introduce yourself and make a speech draft with the expressions and words you learned today.

Some of the components you might want to add are... (just examples)

・position
・job

Remember that this is a formal register, so you need to make it sound really polite.
Also you do not begin your speech with your name suddenly.
Attach nice greetings at the beginning and the end of the speech.

There are three pieces of homework today.

1) On the blog, write your address and telephone number in hiragana or katakana. I wrote my example in the blog.

2) Please read the packet of the handouts of lesson 1. Read the grammar part. If you have any questions, be ready to ask me next time. Also take a look at vocabulary. It would be great if you could take some time to memorize them.

3) Complete the greeting handout. Hand it in to me on Wednesday.

I am planning to do how to read time, and basic sentences on Wednesday.

There are so many interesting and good Japanese products to buy! But, I think it's quite easy now to get what you want in this world. I would first get クリムフクラミ, which are made at a famous store called ヒゲパパ. The first store opened in おさか, but now there are many in アメリカ, including サンフランシスコ.

I would also like a Sony テレビ – I can also get this in ニュヨコ; my fiancée works for Sony!

What a bad weather!

1) Today's homework is to write your favorite thing made in Japan and why. It could be anything.

2) As I said in class, I will be in Washington D.C. for a conference from March 28 till 31. So let me apologize that I need to cancel the class on March 31, Monday. But let me make up for it. The class is supposed to end on the 17th of April. And I will have an extra class the following Monday, on the 21st. That will be the last class.

3) We will be reviewing hiragana and katakana tomorrow and finish them. We will start doing greetings and sentences next week. Please look forward to it!

Two にほんじ

There are two にほんじ I would like to meet - from the past and present.

The first is だいすけまつざか. He is a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, my favorite hometown team - who won the World Series this year!

The second is どげんぜんじ, one of the first masters of ぜん Buddhism and founder of the そとぜん school.

The にん I love to meet would be あゆみ はまざきさん. She is one of my favorite artist, I think she has the most うるわしい voice.

homework and lesson plan

Today's homework is "Choose someone who is famous and Japanese you want to meet and write why." It could be a singer, a movie star, a sport player, or even a prime minister!

In today's class, Drew mentioned about dropped vowels. We will cover it on either Wednesday or Thursday.
Also many of you seem to pronounce Japanese words like English ones. I will show you how different they are from each other in terms of pronunciation sometime this week.

にぽん

This autumn, I plan to visit にぽん for the first time -- on my honeymoon! We will go to ときょ and visit my fiancee's grandfather; and also go to きょと. I'd also like to visit おきなわ.

A place I would like to visit would be はるなさん. Located in the ぐんま prefecture, its nice for sight seeing, there is also おんせん there. But the main reasons for me would be the mountain roads, filled with hairpins, elevation changes and blind turns.

Place to visit- Pamela

A place I would like to visit inにほん(Japan) would beときょ(Tokyo) during theさくら (Cherry blossom) season. Visitingときょ would also give me a chance to トレーン (train) to きょと (Kyoto) and possibly also visit おさか (Osaka), where my friend あさこ (Asako) grew up.

Favorite food- Pamela

My favorite にほんごのたべもの (Japanese food), as common-place as it may be, is definitely sashimi & sushi rolls. Particularly, I love Philadelphia cheese-avocado-さけ(salmon) rolls – おいしい (delicious)!! Also -I’m not sure if this is a Japanese dish-, I also very much enjoy ごはん (rice) with crab salad, Philadelphia cheese, and ふりかけ (furikake- a fish-based powder with seaweed) on top. Sushi bars are very common and usually inexpensive inメキシコ(México) and you should see the creativity of the Japan-Mexico fusion with the ingredients… however, as much as Mexican food is spicy, noわさび (wasabi) for me! ;p

う pronounced as お

Drew took up this topic in the last class. I answered that last う is pronounced as お anytime. I think I forgot to mention that the consonant preceding it must have the vowel お (o) in that case, which is actually written as /oo/. Also, there are cases like /aa/, /ii/, /uu/, and /ee/. We will talk about this on Thursday. So please look forward to it!

some thoughts

Some people might be worried about not being able to memorize all the hiragana characters. Please do not worry about it. I know it takes time. After finishing katakana, we will begin grammar and sentences. Then, you have a lot of chances to read tons of hiragana and katakana anyway. So you will be able to remember naturally. (Well, still, the sooner the better!)

Also you might not be able to find time to do the homework over the weekend. That is fine with me. Just do as much as you can, and hand it in to me whenever you finish it. I am not going to grade you anyway.

Today's homework is to write a place in Japan you want to go and its reason. Please try to use some Japanese words if you could.

We will be starting katakana from Monday. I am planning to spend the whole classes next week for doing hiragana and katakana, and start sentences and grammar from the week after the next.

There are too many great Japanese dishes to list here!

Here are two of my favorites: one salty, one sweet.

This is agedashi tofu: It is fried (age) tofu in dashi broth, usually garnished with ginger, scallion, and bonito flakes.

Next is oshiruko, a famous dessert. It is a red bean soup with mochi. Actually, it's quite difficult to find in the US.

I like ramen. I just like it. I don't have a picture of ramen, so I post a Malwian food.

My favorite Japanese food

My favorite food has to be さしみ, it being a Japanese delicacy primarily consisting of very fresh raw seafood. The best part about it is the taste and texture.
